Fishing Sprats on Loch Lomond: Part 2. (Page 1)
Fishing with Sprats:
In the previous article on fishing with sprats, Euan McGrandle walked us through the process of making our own baits.
In this follow-up we'll take a look at how they should be mounted and fished.
Sprats are generally trolled behind the boat in the manner described in an earlier article on this web site by Peter Lyons, or alternatively though less commonly, fished from a static boat or the shore by a spinning rod. In either way, the preparation and mounting of the bait is identical.
Sprat mounts can be bought from tackle shops, which consist of a swivel, a spike (which may or may not have a lead weight added), a Perspex spinning mechanism and hooks attached to alasticum wire.
Alternatively, home made mounts can be made. These have the advantage that they can be weighted to suit and are invariably made of stronger components than those purchased commercially.
