Fishing Sprats on Loch Lomond (Page 2).
Preparing the Sprats
You can buy commercially prepared sprats from most good tackle shops, and I would recommend that if you want to give this method a go, then it is certainly the easiest way to get started.
I personally prefer to buy sprats from the fishmonger and prepare them myself. The following describes how I do this...
Once you buy your sprats, they require to be cleaned and all loose scales removed. I generally buy about a couple of pounds weight of these (about a kilo), which allows plenty for wastage etc.

Remove all damaged ones and discard. Keep only the ones that are unblemished and of the correct size for further work.

I prefer sprats around three inches in length, but in the selection you will probably find that more are oversized than of the correct length, however you should have sufficient for a couple of season's fishing.

Clean the sprats under cold running water ensuring any loose scales are removed and the head and gills are free of blood etc.
