Sea Trout Fly Fishing on the Big Loch (Introduction).

Fly Fishing on Loch Lomond.

Fly fishing is the cream of the sport on Loch Lomond although to get the most out of the loch it is necessary to troll at the right times. Peter Lyons has produced a very comprehensive article on trolling which should not be missed and is available on this website. Euan McGrandle has backed it up with another illuminating article on trolling with sprats. There is another fabulous article on dapping, by Angus MacRitchie, which often goes hand in hand with traditional fly fishing.

Loch Lomond is blessed with sea trout of the long lived variety which means that it is capable of producing some very large fish which can really only be matched these days in the UK by the Welsh rivers. Loch sea trout fishing has been dealt an almost fatal blow by the introduction of fish farms on the West coast of Scotland. Famous institutions such as Loch Maree, Loch Stack, Loch Sheil, Loch Eilt and many more have been completely lost to the angler seeking sea trout on the fly.

This makes Loch Lomond all the more appealing due to the fact that although stocks have reduced there is still a reasonable run of sea trout. In fact the runs have shown a marked improvement over the last four years or so.

Others fish differently and have success, but I will try here to explain the basics of what, in my mind, is the most exciting aspect of fly fishing.
